Michael Petrak

Executive Vice President, Consulting Services

petrak-photoMike Petrak is the Executive Vice President of Tactician Media.  In this role he works with newspapers to develop and apply a strategic analytical framework to growing their insert revenue and pricing. Utilizing the company’s proprietary national database of insert transaction data and industry-specific business intelligence tools, Mike is helping newspapers harness the power of data-driven strategy to increase the leverage and effectiveness of their sales and pricing plans.

Petrak has senior leadership experience in corporate and business unit roles. He has led corporate sales and marketing efforts at Gatehouse Media, Media News Group, and Knight Ridder, where he served on the company’s Management Committee and as a board member of City Express, an online auction company.

Prior to his corporate leadership roles he was EVP and GM of the Kansas City Star. At the Star he created Grand Communications – one of the earliest newspaper efforts at building separate event marketing, database marketing, and niche publishing businesses. He created innovative partnerships with local TV stations to build the local digital brand kansascity.com, and helped overturn the DOJ’s cross-ownership ruling, allowing the Star to build it’s business through the acquisition of suburban publications.  Petrak has also served as Publisher of two state capital newspapers, the Idaho Statesman (Boise, ID) and the Springfield Journal-Register (Springfield, IL).

Petrak holds a BA in Journalism and an MBA from the University of Iowa, and has taught business classes at Texas Christian University and the University of Iowa.

Mike lives in Denver with his wife Missy. They have two children, Hannah and Nick.
